SUMMARY:Fri. 01/29/16 - Sun. 01/31/16 Camp: large scale capture-the-flag game
DESCRIPTION:Our rescheduled “Polar Bear” camp\, although it looks like the temperatures will be spring-like. \nIt will be centered on a day of large-scale capture-the-flag game using most of the 400 acres available to us.  Planning\, strategy\, orientation\, cooperation\, tactics\, cunning\, stamina\, and a whole lot of fun are on the menu. \nBe especially aware that we will be all over the place\, likely including the underbrush.  Even though the poison ivy might be dormant\, it is still as potent.  Make sure everyone is covered from head to toe for the game.  A change of clothes might be a great option in case of exposure. \nLAST-MINUTE CHANGE:\nDue to our re-schedule and schedule conflicts\, we were no able to secure a priest to come give confessions and celebrate Mass Saturday.  We will have plenty of game time\, and 1st Lt. Koch will add a fire starting kit and fire starting class.  Maybe we’ll eat some local plants too if we have time!\nThe plan is to leisurely break camp on Sunday\, then for those who choose to do so\, caravan down to Mater Dei to attend the 1300 Mass in Class A uniforms (bring LOTS of deodorant!).  We can stop on the way down to grab a bite. \nCamp fees are reduced to $10 per person since we are able to use most of the groceries left from the scrapped dinner plans at our last event. \nRemember that pre-planned and approved QUALITY skits\, story telling\, or games are encouraged for the Sat. night camp fire.  No improv. or silly jokes\, please…

SUMMARY:Fri. 02/26/16 – Sun. 02/28/16 CAMP: Obstacle/Challenge Course
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost\, at TSG1 camp HQ.  Hosting TSG77. \nBy popular demand\, it will be an even improved repeat of last month very successful obstacles/challenges course. \nThe main activity will consist of an obstacle/challenge course\, to be completed by the cadets split by troops.  Beyond the benefits of good  physical exercise\, the cadets will use problem solving skills\, but especially team work\, as they will have to learn to work together and help each others through the course.  They are guaranteed to have great fun in the process as well.  Every cadet will have to get through each challenge before the team can proceed to the next one.  Teams will be timed.  The winning team will get to enjoy a peaceful post-dinner relaxation around the campfire\, while the loosing team will get to enjoy a peaceful dinner dish-washing session around the cleaning station! \n Here are a few very important elements in case we get rain.  Please disregard the last 2 if the weather stays dry.\n\n  Kids will get filthy\, which will be a lot of fun for them and create a lot of great memories!  We have 17 obstacles/challenges to go through.  We might do away with a few if it’s really really bad out there\, but they will get dirty nonetheless.  Bring dirty clothes for the course\, towels and lots of wet wipes or whatever cleaning supplies!  If absolutely needed\, we will be able to use a faucet and hose located u the road about 7 min walk away.\n\n\n\n\nPARKING: It is VERY UNLIKELY that we will be able to drive on the field.  We will use the gravel road (straight down the entrance) to park\, and carry our stuff on foot.  The trailer will be first since it will have to be positioned behind the kitchen area.  Once a car is parked\, it shouldn’t move until we break camp.  If you must leave camp early\, be either the last one to park\, or use the following back-up parking plan:\n Drop your stuff up at the campsite\, then relocate to the property located at 74 Kepler road\, which belongs to the landowner.  If coming from the south road\, it is the property right across the 90 deg left turn in the road\, immediately after passing the water towers.  It is a lot more of a rocky soil.  Park on the north side of that gravel road\, between the trees.  7 min walk back to camp.  See map here: Back-up parking map\n\n\n\n\nI am pretty optimistic that we will be able to run the obstacle course\, but just in case we decided not to\, bring fishing gear.  That would become one of our activities.\n\nFor those ready to receive their Shield\, remember to review the ceremony and memorize the “Promise”                         (http://www.tsg1.org/cadets-badge-ceremony/)\, and to have both the shirt and shield ready with velcro backing.

SUMMARY:Fri. 04/01/16 – Sun. 04/03/16 CAMP with TSG77 at TSG1 H.Q.
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost\, at TSG1 camp HQ.  We will have the pleasure and honor to be hosting the Magnanimous TSG77! \nAs usual\, gate will open at 1600 Fri.\, and close at 1000 Sun. \n Here are a couple of very important elements:\n\n  Kids will get filthy\, which will be a lot of fun for them and create a lot of great memories!  We will have 16 obstacles/challenges for them to go through\, some over water.  We might do away with a few if it’s really really bad out there\, but they will get dirty nonetheless.  Bring dirty clothes for the course\, towels and lots of wet wipes or whatever cleaning supplies!  If absolutely needed\, we will be able to use a faucet and hose located up the road about 7 min walk away.\n\n\n\nPARKING:  The land will get rain Wednesday\, and as you know\, the TX clay can make driving on it dicey and we do not want to tear up the land.   Please monitor emails\, as me may update you as we arrive and survey the field.  In the event we cannot use the regular parking area (Click here: Campground Map)\, we will use the gravel road (straight down the entrance) to park\, and carry our stuff on foot.  The trailer will be first since it will have to be positioned behind the kitchen area.  Once a car is parked\, it shouldn’t move until we break camp.  If you must leave camp early\, be either the last one to park\, or use the following back-up parking plan:\nDrop your stuff up at the campsite\, then relocate to the property located at 74 Kepler road\, which belongs to the landowner.  If coming from the south road\, it is the property right across the 90 deg left turn in the road\, immediately after passing the water towers.  It is a lot more of a rocky soil.  Park on the north side of that gravel road\, between the trees.  Please park tight to make room for everyone.  It is not ideal\, but we’ll have to make it work if needed.  7 min walk back to camp.  See the back-up parking map by clicking here: Back-up parking map\n\n\nTSG1: For those ready to receive their Shield\, remember to review the ceremony and memorize the “Promise”                         (http://www.tsg1.org/cadets-badge-ceremony/)\, and to have both the shirt and shield ready with velcro.

SUMMARY:Fri. 04/21/17 to Sun. 04/23/17: Extended Camp - Trapping - TSG1 HQ
DESCRIPTION:During this camp\, 1st Lt. Koch will teach us about trapping small to medium-sized animals.  The cadets will set 3 different types of traps Saturday.  If we do trap something that is worth keeping either for fur or consumption\, we will prep it Sunday morning. \nBe prepared\, if you wish\, to stay until after lunch on Sunday.  No set menu.  If we have animals to cook on the fire\, we will snack on that\, otherwise we will break camp before lunch. \nThis should be very interesting and possibly quite thrilling! \n  \n

SUMMARY:10/20/17 to 10/22/17: Obstacle Course Camp with TSG 31\, 33 & 77 at Camp HQ
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost. \nWe will be hosting TSG31 and 77 for this camp out.  Soon-to-be TSG33 (Captain Koch) will be there co-camping with TSG1 as well.  It should be a blast! \nSince we might well exceed 100 members\, please pay extra attention to the desired layout so you’ll know where to set your tents.  Park tightly please\, so there will be enough room for everyone.  Remember that we may bring vehicles to offload\, but they need to be relocated to the parking area. \nEarly registration since this one will require extra logistics and organization.  Lt. Vidimos will put together an obstacles list and a map.  We would like to assign obstacle construction (simple) and setup to specific families.  It will spread the workload and help planning. \nOverview of the property:\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/2y361ssk52dts2l/TSG1%20HQ%20labelled%20map.docx?dl=0 \nDetailed 10/20/17 camping plan:\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/i6z22fb7citogr2/Detailed%20Camp%20Site.doc?dl=0 \nBRING GLOVES (MARKED!) FOR THE OBSTACLE COURSE (to prevent ropes burns and splinters) \nPlease prepare a quality skit or story (to be approved by the cadet’s Lt.).  No silliness\, crudeness\, or improvisation\, please.

SUMMARY:02/09/18 to 02/11/18 Camp - Rocketry at camp HQ
DESCRIPTION:  \nTypical cost and camp schedule\, except that it will go to 1130 on Sunday. \n  \nMr. Dave Schaefer will be our subject matter expert guest for this camp.  Dave is a commercial pilot with extensive rocketry\, drone\, and RC experience.  In between other things\, he has appeared in many magazines and on the Discovery channel.  He has worked with NASA on special projects\, won the 2017 National Aeromodeling Championship (on the 1st try!)\, and is a post-graduate project manager at UTD\, using drones for atmospheric measurements\, just to name a few of his accomplishments. \nThis is not the kind of stuff we will get to see\, but for those interested\, to give you an idea of the kind of “from scratch” home-built projects Dave gets into:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HNnIGkQR5M\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6V7OVKT3nw \nUnder his direction\, we will have each boy build his own rocket with his dad Saturday afternoon\, let it set and dry overnight\, and launch it Sunday morning.  We will plan on having the campsite cleaned by 0930 on Sunday\, head to the field from where we will launch (the large wheat field on property)\, and everyone should be on their way home by 1130.  For those who can not stay that long\, you can always take our rocket home.  Dave will tell you what you need and how to do it safely. \nAll the necessary materiel will be provided and rockets should be reusable. \nSince the building of the rockets should only take a couple of hours\, we will use Saturday morning to gather\, split\, and stack wood for the rest of the year. We will have the use of a gas wood splitter\, which the cadets very much enjoyed operating last time we used it. \nDave will likely bring a couple of his “toys” for demo if we have some time to kill.  This should be fun and a cool learning experience for the boys! \nThis activity will require good weather.  If the weather does not cooperate\, we will consider re-scheduling to the following week-end. \n

SUMMARY:06/02/18 Work Day at HQ
DESCRIPTION:  \nOur camp HQ needs a little bit of TLC.  It is of course a free event.  We would like to start as early as possible to beat the heat of the day.  We will take breaks to enjoy our Human Foosball.  If you couldn’t make last camp\, come to try it out.  It is a blast! \nLet’s be there at 0830\, please. \nWork day at HQ will consist of the following: \n\nWeedwacking\nTaking down the “widow maker” dead tree looming over our kitchen area\nClearing the entrance into the field\, which vegetation is overtaking\nSpraying multiple areas for poison ivy\nSpraying a couple of area for fire ants\nPossibly clearing a path from the pipeline clearing to the pond (the dam has been cleared of all vegetation by the city).  This would be a service to both the owner and us.\n\nThis might only take a few hours with a bunch of people\, or most of the day if we have few members.  Please consider helping.  This is OUR campsite\, and we all benefit from it\, so all should help maintaining it if able.  The cadets should be made to understand this and encouraged to participate. \nWhat you would need to bring: \n\nWeedwacker\nLoopers\nChainsaw\nPole saw\nYour own lunch(es)\nYour own water\nHats\nSunscreen\nWork gloves\n\nPlease RSVP so I know how many we can count on.  Also\, please let me know what tool(s) you will bring. \nThe landowner is OK with people camping that weekend\, but it will NOT be a TSG1-sponsored event.  Those itching to camp simply have access to the property.  If you intend to do so\, please let me know so I can let the landowner know. \n

SUMMARY:11/30/18 to 12/02/18 - Camp: "Contio" with TSG5/31/33/77/1107 at TSG1 H.Q. - CAMPCRAFT
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and fee.\n\nSEE CAMP DETAILS & SCHEDULE HERE:   https://www.dropbox.com/s/lovh00t498wjp3s/Contio%20Campcraft%20Nov%2030%20thru%20Dec%202%202018%20TSG%20Campout.pdf?dl=0\n\nOur upcoming assembly of TSG Troops or ‘Contio’  will focus on campcraft and is a mere 9 days from today -Nov 30 thru Dec 2.  It will be held at our HQ camp and we will have Troops 5\, 31\, 33 and 77 and 1170 (from waco) in attendance.  We expect about 80-100 folks total.\n\nEach troop will be responsible for its own food and some of it will be done over open fire by the boys.  There are a few things we do need to coordinate.  Let me know by Sunday\, Nov:25 pm if you can help coordinate one or more of the following numbered things:\n\n1)  We need to lead the campfire on Friday and Saturday nites-\n2)  We need to lead the morning and evening prayer and flag ceremony on Saturday and Sunday morning prayer.  Note that all troop captains have expressed interest in learning to to this better\, so who ever wishes to coordinate this might be ready to have boys from all the troops helping out.\n3)  We need to make sure that we are sufficiently prepared for the Mass- Fr. McDonnell will be offering the rite of Penance and the Sacrifice of the Mass.  We do need some help in coordinating servers for this as other troops may wish to assist in this regard- Scott can you do this?\n4)  Can someone join me in arriving early friday afternoon ( I intend to arrive by 2:30 at the latest) and assist organizing fire rings for the friday nite campfire\,\n5)  Can someone be in charge of making sure that the saturday nite campfire is ready too?\n\n\nAs you can see from the schedule\, the various troops will be putting on one or two ‘campcraft’ sessions concurrently on saturday morning.  this means that no one will be able to attend all of them\, but everyone will be able to attend at least 3 of them.  Each session will run about 45 minutes\, and allow 15 minutes of transition between sessions.  We are responsible for the’ Knots you need to Know’ session and the ‘Gear you need and how to Pack it.”  My 16 yo son Max will lead the Gear group\, and I can lead the Knots group but both of us can use some assistance. If you know about these things\, can you help?  Let me know.\n\nAlso\, we are going to have a human foosball tournament on Saturday afternoon\, and someone good at setting up a tournament needs to run this\, otherwise we will have bonafide chaos and not too many will get to play.  The games will necessarily be short.  I will also bring a long\, large rope and we can use for the boys to have a tug-of-war with between foosball sessions.  Does anyone have some horseshoes or similar games that they can set up for the boys to play that afternoon?\n\n6)  We will need to have some skits or some activities to do for the Saturday nite campfire that will include the entire group.  Any volunteers?  Is there a Dad or two that can lead a good Story or Spiritual Reflection for part of the campfire?  Likewise\, can one of your boys sing a song or do some type entertainment for the event?\n\n7)  While we will do the food shopping as normal\, this camp we wish to focus on getting your kids (and you) the chance to build campcrafts skills.  One of those ways is to give all the chance to cook their own food.  So\, as normal\, friday nite meal is on your own\, but saturday breakfast will be something like ‘eggs and bacon in a paper bag’ https://youtu.be/sUhmhVanP_o and for saturday nite\, something like what we used to call a ‘bum supper’ now known as a ‘tin foil supper’ https://youtu.be/S0V43G_qYcI.  If you know of a great type of meal\, let us know so that we can get the raw materials for such a meal and have them ready to prepare for this campout. For such meals\, we will prepare the raw ingredients\, but the goal is to have each boy prepare and cook his own. That means that you might see about getting some gloves and a small shovel or tongs for your use in tending the meals while in the fire since so many will be doing this.\n\n8) Fire Tender:  As you can see\, we are really going to be relying on open fires a lot this campout and I would like to get one or two of the Dads to make sure that we have great beds of coals in adequate quantities for each meal so that the fire is ready and able to do the job when the meal/campfire time comes.\n\nFinally\, this will be the only event we have in December as there are insufficient priests to conduct our Day of Reflection during advent.  However\, Fr. McDonnell will be leading us in a Christmas season day of reflection at Mater Dei\, but it won’t be until January.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP:\n \n \n \n \n We will not attend this event\n Event Start Date* Last name of those NOT attending* \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nTypical camp schedule and fee\, although gates will be opened at 1700.  If you want to arrive earlier and know St. George Feast Day\, you should have no problem opening the lock. \nFr McDonnell we will there to hear Confessions and celebrate Mass Saturday afternoon.\n\nThe schedule is simple:  dock build starting early Saturday till done.  We need dads to bring their cordless drills.  We will have a generator and power saws\, so the dads need to think about gloves for them and their boys and to decide what level of involvement their cadet(s) will have; screw\, saw\, deck paint or all the above.\n\nThe Warners have been a true blessing to our troop by letting us use their wonderful land all these years\, and by maintaining it for us as well.  Our area is freshly mowed for every camp\, and that is not by coincidence.  This will be a great opportunity to do something for them in return.  This is not a completely selfless gift either\, since we will certainly make good use of these docks.  They are looking forward to us performing this renovation.  Let’s show up in numbers\, so we can do a job TSG1 is proud to call its own!

See below for our alternate\, awesome plan! \nChris\, the HQ landowner is giving us access to his pond anytime until normalcy resumes.  This is a great way to safely get some fresh air.  A semi-pro angler who fishes his pond caught 30 fish just a couple of weeks ago and said that he hadn’t seen that kind of fishing since the 80’s! \nWhen going on your own\, use either the regular gate or the one by the water tower.  The code to the gate lock is St. George’s feast day\, April 23\, or 0423.  Please make sure to lock it behind you\, linking it to another lock.  Other people have their own locks\, and interlocking them gives us all access. \nRandom people seem to use his pond occasionally.  If you see anyone else there\, please notify Eric Gruchet at 214-213-0216 and he will pass it on to Chris who will decide if he wants to check it out or not.  Some have his permission\, some do not. \nALTERNATE\, AWESOME PLAN FOR SAT. 04/25/20: \nWe will have none other than Wally Marshall\, “Mr. Crappy” come give everyone a lesson and fish with us!!!  He’s super nice guy who lives 3 miles from HQ.  He said he will have goodie-bags for everyone\, t-shirts and what-nots.  He is very excited to be able to be doing this and was the one thanking us profusely! \nFor those of you who do not know who “Mr. Crappie” is\, click on the links below.  If you have ever bought any fishing gear anywhere\, you have seen his name.  We will have our very own superstar of fishing! \nhttps://www.mrcrappie.com/ \nhttps://www.crappieexpo.com/ \nhttps://www.wired2fish.com/news/crappie-expo-2020-destination-announced/ \nPlease plan on arriving to be set up by the pond at 0900 for a very educative and fun day of fishing! \nWe WILL be observing proper social distancing for this event\, so there should be no fears with compliance with suggested health directives.   Further\, we will not be sharing ANY supplies for safety reasons.  Let’s be responsible in the way we “gather”.  The troop will not provide anything except the opportunity to get to the outdoors.  Bring your own drinks\, lunches\, sunblock\, spare rods\, and whatever supplies you may need. \nPlan on entering through the water tanks gate on the southeast corner\, south from the regular gate.  Park inside the gate and walk from there\, or further down the path if you have the right vehicle to do so and the ground is dry enough.  Plenty of parking areas closer to the pond. \nMr. Crappie needs to know how many people will attend so he can bring enough “goodies and t-shirts”. Trust me\, kids will get a kick about wearing a “Mr. Crappy” t-shirt… \nPlease register asap. \nLet’s get out\, get some fresh air\, learn\, and have good fun fishing! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you.  God bless.

SUMMARY:01/22/21 - 01/24/21 Camp CANCELLED - Covid ravages within our ranks
DESCRIPTION:CAMP CANCELLED\n\n\nThis campout will focus on two separate items:  \n                        1)  Learning to use shepherd’s slings and how to lash (so we can build tripods and eventually\, trebuchets).\n                        2) Your Chef’s hat:  The troop will supply all the raw materials for the meals\, but each family will be responsible for preparing their own meals.  A meal plan will be available Tuesday night (1/19) so you can be thinking about it.\n\nSacraments?  Yes\, Fr. McDonnell has confirmed that he will be hearing confessions and saying Mass Saturday afternoon.\n \nSign up is now open for this camp.  Camp will run from Friday night and end at 10 am Sunday. \nVanAlstyne has had less than 0.10″ rain since Jan 1\, so we can expect pretty dry conditions to camp.  Long range forecast calls for lows in the low 40’s and highs partly cloudy and in the upper 50’s.

Former (Founding) Captain of Troop 33 and former Troop 1 1st Lieutenant Eddy Koch will be joining us to instruct us on trapping. He will begin setting traps in the afternoon on Friday\, so if anyone wants to come early\, they can experience his first round of setting traps. Then\, early Saturday morning\, we’ll pack our breakfasts and see what was caught. Mr. Koch will then instruct us on what to do with it! We will repeat the process Saturday evening\, with our final recovery Sunday morning. Saturday afternoon\, I plan to rehearse the flag raising and lowering ceremonies for any cadets who have not been so trained. We will clear up the site and leave hopefully in time for everyone to attend the 1:30 PM Mass at Mater Dei\, if desired. \nAt TSG1 HQ.  Typical schedule and cost. \n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s to a blessed Lent for you and your families.\n\n\n\n\n\nRespectfully\,\nChristopher Hatfield\, Captain\nTroop 1\nPrima Inter Pares\nTroops of Saint George\n\nVirtus.  Honor.  Fraternitas.\nwww.tsg1.org\nCell: 907-229-4135

However\, life being what it sometimes is\, we have not had the opportunities to obtain the training necessary for such an experience.\n\nIn lieu of this\, our esteemed former Troops colleague and continuing guest\, Captain (Emeritus-Troop 33) Eddy Koch has once again offered to show us the ways of foraging at our Troop 1 HQ. We will plan for only Friday night to Saturday evening so as not to interfere with Mother’s Day. Feel free to come for only Saturday\, if necessary\, but please arrive early so as to have a full day of hiking and foraging education. If you arrive too late in the morning\, the troops will end up hiking away from the main camp\, and you might miss out. Schedule and location details will be forthcoming on this event page\, and I will notify you via email when that is ready. For now\, please consider whether you can attend and RSVP/Register now.\n\n1Lt. Fusselman and I\, unfortunately\, will not be able to attend\, so Lt. Zipper will be in charge\, with the support of the other officers who attend. I’m sorry to have to miss this one: it is a peaceful day of hiking\, fellowship\, and learning how to survive on the plants that God’s nature provides\, should that ever become necessary\, and Captain Koch always makes it interesting.
