SUMMARY:12/19/15: Whole day event: Junior and Senior Cadets spiritual retreat
DESCRIPTION:Day event: 1000 to 2200.  Please arrive on time as to not interrupt spiritual talks. \nClass A uniforms. \nDay event: \nJunior and Senior Cadets spiritual retreat at the TSG1 at the Benedictine Monastery of Thien Tam in Kerens (near Corsicana)\, led by Father Portzer from Mater Dei. \nThe precise schedule is yet to be determined\, but it will have a typical camp schedule\, including lunch\, campfire and camp dinner.  The activities will be of the spiritual kind; lectures per age ranges\, adoration\, Mass\, meditation\, father/son(s) time.  The boys will of course have plenty of free time as well. \nIt is a day event by design.  This gives the opportunity to dads who cannot make it to send their boy(s) with another dad.  Just remember to fill out the “Chaperon Form ” (under “Legal Docs”). \nIt is a beautiful facility with a chapel that is made available to us throughout the day\, and with both outdoors and indoors options for the lectures.  Therefore\, the weather should not be a factor.  If it turns out to be nasty\, we will simply cancel the campfire dinner and pack up early. \nIt is a wonderful way to prepare for Christmas and for the kids to be exposed to monastic life. \nPlease register here below by adding the necessary number of tickets to your cart and checking out. \nOnly $5 per person this time\, to be paid on the website.

SUMMARY:Fri. 01/29/16 - Sun. 01/31/16 Camp: large scale capture-the-flag game
DESCRIPTION:Our rescheduled “Polar Bear” camp\, although it looks like the temperatures will be spring-like. \nIt will be centered on a day of large-scale capture-the-flag game using most of the 400 acres available to us.  Planning\, strategy\, orientation\, cooperation\, tactics\, cunning\, stamina\, and a whole lot of fun are on the menu. \nBe especially aware that we will be all over the place\, likely including the underbrush.  Even though the poison ivy might be dormant\, it is still as potent.  Make sure everyone is covered from head to toe for the game.  A change of clothes might be a great option in case of exposure. \nLAST-MINUTE CHANGE:\nDue to our re-schedule and schedule conflicts\, we were no able to secure a priest to come give confessions and celebrate Mass Saturday.  We will have plenty of game time\, and 1st Lt. Koch will add a fire starting kit and fire starting class.  Maybe we’ll eat some local plants too if we have time!\nThe plan is to leisurely break camp on Sunday\, then for those who choose to do so\, caravan down to Mater Dei to attend the 1300 Mass in Class A uniforms (bring LOTS of deodorant!).  We can stop on the way down to grab a bite. \nCamp fees are reduced to $10 per person since we are able to use most of the groceries left from the scrapped dinner plans at our last event. \nRemember that pre-planned and approved QUALITY skits\, story telling\, or games are encouraged for the Sat. night camp fire.  No improv. or silly jokes\, please…

SUMMARY:General Troop Meeting Sun. 02/21/16\, 1900 to 2100 at Mater Dei
DESCRIPTION:1.   Camp prep: our next camp\, scheduled for 02/26/16 will be an obstacle/challenge course.  Those are extremely popular with the boys\, and we plan on it not only being fun\, but also foster team work and altruism.  There should be many obstacles and challenges\, more than just a few men can handle.  If this is to be successful\, it will require the involvement of many dads for planning\, preparation\, and supplies.  For this reason\, please make every effort to attend\, even if your boy(s) cannot.  If you are not able to make next camp\, you can still help with the planning.\n\n\n\n2.   SENIORS: one of this year goals was to start establishing patrols\, with internal rankings and responsibilities.  We would like to get this started with the Seniors.  Once established and tested\, we will consider how to organize younger patrols next\, although their leadership rests on the adult leaders.  Please review the Officers Manual guidelines (website\, under “Resources”) with your Senior Cadet to prepare.  A vote would likely take place next month.  All seniors should view this meeting as mandatory.\n\n\n\n\nTo recap\, this meeting is for ALL DADS\, ALL SENIORS\, and optional for juniors.

SUMMARY:Fri. 02/26/16 – Sun. 02/28/16 CAMP: Obstacle/Challenge Course
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost\, at TSG1 camp HQ.  Hosting TSG77. \nBy popular demand\, it will be an even improved repeat of last month very successful obstacles/challenges course. \nThe main activity will consist of an obstacle/challenge course\, to be completed by the cadets split by troops.  Beyond the benefits of good  physical exercise\, the cadets will use problem solving skills\, but especially team work\, as they will have to learn to work together and help each others through the course.  They are guaranteed to have great fun in the process as well.  Every cadet will have to get through each challenge before the team can proceed to the next one.  Teams will be timed.  The winning team will get to enjoy a peaceful post-dinner relaxation around the campfire\, while the loosing team will get to enjoy a peaceful dinner dish-washing session around the cleaning station! \n Here are a few very important elements in case we get rain.  Please disregard the last 2 if the weather stays dry.\n\n  Kids will get filthy\, which will be a lot of fun for them and create a lot of great memories!  We have 17 obstacles/challenges to go through.  We might do away with a few if it’s really really bad out there\, but they will get dirty nonetheless.  Bring dirty clothes for the course\, towels and lots of wet wipes or whatever cleaning supplies!  If absolutely needed\, we will be able to use a faucet and hose located u the road about 7 min walk away.\n\n\n\n\nPARKING: It is VERY UNLIKELY that we will be able to drive on the field.  We will use the gravel road (straight down the entrance) to park\, and carry our stuff on foot.  The trailer will be first since it will have to be positioned behind the kitchen area.  Once a car is parked\, it shouldn’t move until we break camp.  If you must leave camp early\, be either the last one to park\, or use the following back-up parking plan:\n Drop your stuff up at the campsite\, then relocate to the property located at 74 Kepler road\, which belongs to the landowner.  If coming from the south road\, it is the property right across the 90 deg left turn in the road\, immediately after passing the water towers.  It is a lot more of a rocky soil.  Park on the north side of that gravel road\, between the trees.  7 min walk back to camp.  See map here: Back-up parking map\n\n\n\n\nI am pretty optimistic that we will be able to run the obstacle course\, but just in case we decided not to\, bring fishing gear.  That would become one of our activities.\n\nFor those ready to receive their Shield\, remember to review the ceremony and memorize the “Promise”                         (http://www.tsg1.org/cadets-badge-ceremony/)\, and to have both the shirt and shield ready with velcro backing.

SUMMARY:Fri. 04/01/16 – Sun. 04/03/16 CAMP with TSG77 at TSG1 H.Q.
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost\, at TSG1 camp HQ.  We will have the pleasure and honor to be hosting the Magnanimous TSG77! \nAs usual\, gate will open at 1600 Fri.\, and close at 1000 Sun. \n Here are a couple of very important elements:\n\n  Kids will get filthy\, which will be a lot of fun for them and create a lot of great memories!  We will have 16 obstacles/challenges for them to go through\, some over water.  We might do away with a few if it’s really really bad out there\, but they will get dirty nonetheless.  Bring dirty clothes for the course\, towels and lots of wet wipes or whatever cleaning supplies!  If absolutely needed\, we will be able to use a faucet and hose located up the road about 7 min walk away.\n\n\n\nPARKING:  The land will get rain Wednesday\, and as you know\, the TX clay can make driving on it dicey and we do not want to tear up the land.   Please monitor emails\, as me may update you as we arrive and survey the field.  In the event we cannot use the regular parking area (Click here: Campground Map)\, we will use the gravel road (straight down the entrance) to park\, and carry our stuff on foot.  The trailer will be first since it will have to be positioned behind the kitchen area.  Once a car is parked\, it shouldn’t move until we break camp.  If you must leave camp early\, be either the last one to park\, or use the following back-up parking plan:\nDrop your stuff up at the campsite\, then relocate to the property located at 74 Kepler road\, which belongs to the landowner.  If coming from the south road\, it is the property right across the 90 deg left turn in the road\, immediately after passing the water towers.  It is a lot more of a rocky soil.  Park on the north side of that gravel road\, between the trees.  Please park tight to make room for everyone.  It is not ideal\, but we’ll have to make it work if needed.  7 min walk back to camp.  See the back-up parking map by clicking here: Back-up parking map\n\n\nTSG1: For those ready to receive their Shield\, remember to review the ceremony and memorize the “Promise”                         (http://www.tsg1.org/cadets-badge-ceremony/)\, and to have both the shirt and shield ready with velcro.

SUMMARY:Fri. 09/30/16 – Sun. 10/02/16: CAMP: Fishing (away)
DESCRIPTION:Typical camp schedule and cost. \nThis venue is a little farther than usual\, about 1:30 from Irving\, but it has great features for a successful fishing and learning experience.  Read the venue details for inaccuracy on Google Earth and maybe other maps. \nNearly 1000 acres\, with 3 fishing options: \n\nA pond stocked with hungry large bass (I was told 3-1/2 to 4 lbs)\n 2 other ponds with plenty of pan fish\n\nPlease click on the following 2 links for pictures with details on how to get there.  There is no cell phone coverage at the campsite!  If you get there without knowing where to go\, you will be on your own!  I strongly suggest printing those maps and taking them with you: \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/kutdq8mb6p7cc4u/Hidden%20Meadows%20%20-%20Arrival.doc?dl=0 \n  \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/22tm7jzt0ntkbec/Hidden%20Meadows%20-%20Details.doc?dl=0 \n  \n  \n  \nPLEASE come prepared!  Steven Osteen will offer a short recap on techniques\, but the whole point is to have dads teach and prepare their son(s).  Be ready for early fishing Saturday.  Everyone brings his own equipment\, fishing supplies and bait. \n1st Lt. Koch will bring laminated field guides to fishing for those who do not have one.  If you have already received one\, please bring it.  Here is a link to an large version of it to help you prepare: \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/oot672879cb7rch/TSG%20Field%20to%20Texas%20Fishing.docx?dl=0 \nFISHING LICENSE MANDATORY FOR ANYONE 17 YRS OLD AND OVER\, even on private land. \nClick on the following links for film and pics of the place: \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/i915doaryt0qx0z/IMG_3092.MOV?dl=0 \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/tvzfg4yxq3plrc0/IMG_3095.JPG?dl=0 \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/5fn75qy9b77uu4w/IMG_3097.JPG?dl=0 \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/taupfnm7eeu3re8/IMG_3099.JPG?dl=0 \n  \n———— Yeah\, that’s how you recon potential camping spots\, when you are TSG1! 😉

SUMMARY:10/09/16 Volunteering at the Mater Dei 25th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Since we cannot make any event “mandatory”\, we will call this one a “TSG1 Day of obligation“!  For this reason\, there is no need to register.  I trust you will be there unless you have a serious reason not to be.  If this is the case\, please let me know so I can let MD know how many of us to expect.  Thank you. \nThis is our opportunity to serve our parish and show gratitude to our priests for taking the time out of their very busy schedules to come offer Mass and confessions at every camp\, no matter how far. \nI understand that many of you are not Mater Dei parishioners\, but as TSG1 members\, Mater Dei is your official troop parish and Father Longua your troop chaplain. \nClass A uniforms.  We will volunteer for general needs.  Very much like what we did at the Thien Tam Monastery.  This will be a great way to serve and will also give us great visibility. \nEveryone able to come must come represent the troop and show gratitude.  MAKE FATHER LONGUA PROUD! \nSee the event flyer here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yapys2lompopj1z/2016%20Mater%20Dei%20Picnic%20Flyer.pdf?dl=0 \nBe there as early as you can and plan on staying to help with the clean-up.

SUMMARY:Fri. 10/28/16 to SATURDAY (ONLY) 10/29/16: CAMP: Shooting & Archery with TSG31
DESCRIPTION:Atypical schedule and location due to Halloween week-end.  The event was changed after the officers voted on it.  Longer drive (slightly over 2 hrs from the center of Irving) but deemed worth it.  Consider taking that Friday afternoon off if able. \n\nOfficial start at 1600\, but feel free to arrive early\, the host will be there\nTSG31 does their ceremonies Fri evenings\, and we will join them for ours\, where we will awards some shields and stars\, so arrive in Class A\nWe will have dinner Fri\n\nLike it often is for addresses in the country\, different maps show different spots.  Click on the link below for exact description: \n\nday.  TSG31 will handle that.  TSG1 will handle breakfast and lunch Sat. Dinner at 1830.  If you do not plan on arriving before 1900\, please bring your own.\nTSG31 does skits during the Fri cracker barrel.  If you have a QUALITY skit\, bring it to me or 1st Lt. Koch for approval.  Nothing last minute improv. or sillyness\, please.\nThere will be Mass Sat. morning at camp (will not satisfy Sun. obligation) – wake up and jump into your Class A\nFor those who want to stay later than 1400 on Sat.\, we will be shooting clay pigeons with shotguns\, and there are ponds that we can fish.  Remember it ceases to be a TSG-sponsored event after 1400\n\n\nSHOOTING:\n\n\nBring any firearm you wish\, including bows and arrows (if we have time to shoot those) but no BB guns.  Children could feel too free with those\, and this way\, any weapon we see in anyone’s hand will be considered lethal.  It helps keep areas sterile.\nThere will be a station for handguns\, and another for rifles\, including AR15 and similar (for seniors only!)\nBe on the lookout for a safety briefing from TSG31\, but the most obvious warning is that all and any weapon should remain locked in your vehicle until it is time to shoot them\, unless you carry (with the utmost caution) on your person.\nIf you bring a weapon (highly suggested)\, please bring enough ammo for each cadet to get at least 2 or 3 shots in (another reason why we kept the cost at $5).  We can likely expect 50 cadets.\nFor semi or fully auto rifles (seniors)\, cadets will be given a chance to shoot them 2 or 3 times\, depending on how much ammo you are willing to donate.  If they want to have a little more fun\, they will be able to purchase YOUR ammo for $8 for a clip of 20.  Bring plenty of extra if you have.\nWe will have SOME extra\, but try to bring your own ear and eye protection\, and spotting scope if you have one.\nSince it will only go from Fri. through Sat. afternoon\, the cost will be $5 per camper.  Some TSG31 member elect to camp through Sunday.  This is an option\, but it will cease being a TSG1-sponsored event at 2 pm Saturday.  Please let me know if you plan on doing that\, so I can give Capt. O’Flaherty and our host a heads-up.  There is a Catholic church which offers an 1100 Mass on Sundays\, located 18′ away:\nSt Theresa’s Catholic Church\, 209 West Oak Street\, Olney\, TX 76374\n\n\n \nRegister as soon as you can so we can give our hosts plenty of heads-up on our numbers.  Remember to tell me if you plan on staying Sat. night as well.\nDIRECTIONS(!): \nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/ts2cbqbdcvdgiir/Actual%20spot%20vs.%20address.docx?dl=0 \n  \n  \nTo see picks of the property\, click on the links below:\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/wcvr1jffvsvjkg2/1835%20True%20RD%20image.jpg?dl=0\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/58aiy074pajtqi2/IMG_2671%20%281%29.jpg?dl=0\nhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/f6crwe677f8xjyr/roadpond5.14.jpg?dl=0 \n

SUMMARY:Fri. 05/19/17 to Sun. 05/21/17: Camp - Restoration Homestead\, Kerens\, TX - Part Deux!
DESCRIPTION:We will send more details but here is an overview of the activities:\n\nSat. morning breakfast with eggs the cadets will collect straight from the hen house\, biscuits backed in pizza oven\nDispatch a small pig (privately)\nPrepare the pig and spit for roasting\, start roasting (whole day process)\nService projects: repair hole in driveway\, gather firewood throughout the property\nActivities: discover and use the 1800’s print\, tour of the wood workshop\nFishing if time to spare\n\n\n\nRemember to bring:\nFishing gear (marked)\nShovels (marked)\nWork gloves (marked)\nSkits if you have for the camp fire (you don’t have to mark those!)Star gazing (beautiful place for it) – IF ANYONE HAS A TELESCOPE\, PLEASE BRING IT\n\nFor our hosts:\nBill Mureiko and his family are being incredibly kind to us\, and are basically giving us their whole day.  I offered some kind of compensation besides the service project\, without success. They produce their own meat (sausage\, bacon\, etc…\, processed in town).  They sent me home with some when I went to visit the place.  It is delicious!  After I gently insisted on doing something for them\, Bill suggested that if people were so inclined\, they could stop by their property store on the way out.  I think it is a fantastic idea\, and a useful way to thank them and “bring home the bacon!”  Please keep that in mind.  Thank you.\n\n  \n  \nBIG CHANGE FROM THE USUAL: NO MASS OR CONFESSIONS SATURDAY; MASS SUNDAY AT 1100 AT THE THIEN TAM MONASTERY (5 MIN AWAY). \n  \n  \nPRECISE DIRECTIONS: \nWhen you run out of concrete\, make a left at the fork: \n \n  \nThis is the place\, but do not enter here.  Enter at the next dirt road on the right hand-side (next pic). \n \n  \nTurn right: \n \n  \nAt the end of the dirt road\, make a right through the gate (see next picture) and look for the TSG1 sign for camping area\, across from the house in this picture. Drop your stuff off then return to this area and park your vehicle back to the left side of the house.  If the grounds are wet\, we will stay on the dirt road. \n \n  \nThis is the path to the camping area.  Look for the sign.  The trailer will NOT be there (it will be farther down by the campfire area). \n \n

SUMMARY:Sat. 07/29/17 to Sun. 07/30/17: Overnight Canoeing Trip
DESCRIPTION:  \nA few of important points first: \n\nThe trailer will not be there.  This is a “minimalist” camp where each family is responsible for all of their supplies and sustenance.  Please read carefully the event schedule\, especially the “gear” section below.\n leadership TBD.\nIt is an option to camp at Rochelle’s  Friday evening\, but you would be on your own.  They have a very nice campground with swing rope onto the river\, fishing spots\, etc….  $10 per car.  Again\, not sponsored\, but I will be glad to let everyone know who will be spending the night so you can meet up.  Contact Rochelle’s directly for reservations: http://www.rochellescanoeandkayakrental.com/\nWeather and water levels look good\, but stay on top of communications as things could change.  The dam is releasing water daily and I was told the river was fine\, with a lot of people canoeing.  The levels will be checked one last time the day before.\nThere will be no Mass.  It can be considered travel\, and the obligation is not rigid in those cases.\n\n  \nHere is a description of things to expect: \nJourney – From Rochelle’s downstream to pick up point is 10 mile. Probably about 7-8 hours total canoe time. Approximately halfway (maybe a little more) should be some sand bars sufficient for camping. Departure is 8:30 am Saturday morning.  We don’t want to sweat it last last time\, so this will basically be the same trek\, but over 2 days\, with plenty of free time to enjoy the water\, swim\, fish\, rest alongside a bank\, etc… \nYou will be provided with a sat phone and a Epi-Pen.  Bring your own first-aid kit. \n  \n\nPotential Schedule:\n\nSaturday\n\nmeet at 0830 at the Rochelle’s let-in location\, just down from their office\n0900 let in\n12 pm – gather on water in canoes for Angelus if not at campsite/continue to campsite\n12:30-1 pm lunch and set up camp\n1-5 fish for dinner\, swim\, enjoy\n3pm Divine Mercy Chaplet\n6-8pm Dinner on own\n8-9pm s’mores if you brought them and successfully make a fire\n9pm rosary\n10pm lights out\n\n\nSunday\n\n7am rise\n7:15 am Morning Prayers\n7:30-8:30 Breakfast on own\, pack up camps\n8:30-10:30am explore\, fish\, enjoy\n10:30am Canoe departure\n12:00 stop for angelus and lunch\n1pm continue to pick up point/back to Rochelle’s\nPick-up between 1499 and 1600.  You can call for an earlier pick-up\, but you would be responsible for the extra $20 pick-up fee.\n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended supplies: \n\nWater/Food\n\nWater 1 gallon/person/day or combination bring/purify. No special equipment for purification except empty gallon jug (you already drank one)\, a pot and a flame to boil. Bringing powdered Gatorade is great if hot out and for flavoring purified water.\nFood:\n\nhope to catch dinner for Saturday night\npackaged dishes that require hot water like ramen\, Knorr pastas or rice\, oatmeal\, foil packaged meats\, MRE’s or prepakaged meals from Cabelas\, BassPro\, REI or walmart. Nutritional bars/nuts for snacks\, oil\, seasonings\n\n\n\n\nGear:\n\nWaterproof bag for your gear – Awesome Large Dry Bag on Amazon at great price\nSUNSCREEN\, bug repellent\nShelter (luxury: 2-3 man tent  or primitive: tarp) large could be problematic – camping on sand bars\nGround cloth/tarp\nultra-light sleeping bag or blanket (will be hot)\nCordage 25-50ft\nmess kit (eating and cooking)\nFire starting materials (lighter\,matches)\nCamp Stove (small\, propane) I have a couple\nFlashlight (backup batteries)\nToiletries (w/biodegradable soaps) every store with gear has camp soap\nKnife and rosary – DUH!\nHat\nSaw (several will have these)\ntrash bags\nextra clothes – GONNA GET WET!\nIf you bring cooler be sure it locks and tied-in case canoe capsizes\nFishing gear / pole or primitive\nThe troop will bring and Epi-Pen and a basic 1st aid kit\nTHINK BAGS TO KEEP STUFF DRY\, ZIPLOCK BAGS\, A WAY TO ATTACH EVERYTHING TO YOUR CANOE\, AND DRINKING WATER! Given the amount of stuff you will have to take with you\, 2 per canoe should probably be the max.  We will spread people out to make it work.\n\n\n\nCheck out Rochelle’s checklist: http://www.rochellescanoeandkayakrental.com/checklist \nFees: \n\nCanoe Rental Overnight = $50.00/canoe + $20.00 (covered by troop) – refundable deposit/canoe\nCamping Friday Night = $10/car for those who want to camp either Fri. or Sun.\n\nSatellite Phone rental $80 + calls @ $1.75/min (troop will have one but feel free to rent your own)

SUMMARY:Sun. 08/27/17: Day activity: Pool party/planning meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly: \n\n  \nSteve and Cindy Porter (from Porter’s Army Navy)\, big fans and strong supporters of TSG\, have generously insisted that the troop uses there residence once again for our planning meeting/pool party.  It is time to plan for next year goals and activities\, and present major changes and a new direction. \nAll troop members are invited and encouraged to come to the Porters’ residence from 1500 to 2000 at:\n1425 Broadmoor Lane\nIrving\, TX \nEven if you cannot stay long\, please come to the planning meeting.  We will do that first\, hopefully close to 1530 for an hour or so\, so we can get as many people involved as possible. \nBring campouts ideas and suggestions!  Don’t assume others will!  Remember the campsite and camp ideal requirements:\n\n\nwithin approximately 1hr of Irving\n1 central activity for the cadets\, long enough to occupy them for at least half a day\nfirewood available\, or built-in time to collect it\nfree venue if possible\n\n\nThis is your troop\, and your input is required.  It would also be a good time to bring up any general suggestions or issues anyone might have. \n  \nThe pool has a slide\, diving board\, and there is a concrete area with basketball hoop.  The dads and officers will be able to meet either on the outside patio or inside.  The troop will provide/handle dinner on the grill.  Since our policy specifically prohibits alcohol on campouts\, and this is designed to be a more relaxed atmosphere where safety is not such an issue\, adults are authorized to bring the beverage of their choice\, while remembering that “…our adult leaders are gentlemen and know the sinfulness of drunkenness…” (Officers’ Manual)  and that we have an example to set. \nThis event is free\, but we will have a donation jar to help cover the cost of food. \nNaturally\, bring bathing suits!
