Former (Founding) Captain of Troop 33 and former Troop 1 1st Lieutenant Eddy Koch will be joining us to instruct us on trapping. He will begin setting traps in the afternoon on Friday\, so if anyone wants to come early\, they can experience his first round of setting traps. Then\, early Saturday morning\, we’ll pack our breakfasts and see what was caught. Mr. Koch will then instruct us on what to do with it! We will repeat the process Saturday evening\, with our final recovery Sunday morning. Saturday afternoon\, I plan to rehearse the flag raising and lowering ceremonies for any cadets who have not been so trained. N. TX Orienteering Dillo-Goat Competition!! \nA few of us had some practice last week using maps and compasses\, and now it’s time for us to put our skills to the test. Don’t worry about not making it last week: Show up anyway.\n\nI’m sorry for the delay in providing information on this camp: I’ve been struggling to obtain all the information we need\, and I didn’t want to send excess emails like I have been known to do.\n\nWe’re still trying to nail down the details of the orienteering competition: The organization putting on this event does not seem very forthcoming with their registration for it. A couple of generous donors who are aware of this event have offered to cover the extra costs involved with the competition\, so please include these anonymous donors and their families in your prayer intentions.\n\nOur liaison with the competition organization is keeping an eye out for the registration and will register us for the competition. Assuming the registration does open\, In order to be registered for the competition\, you must register for this camp by NO LATER THAN 8 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING. Our liaison will register for us after that.\n\nAt the LBJ Grasslands\, it’s open camping. People can camp where they want when they want\, so we face a couple of challenges. First\, we need to figure out where the competition will be and how close to that we can camp. Secondly\, since people can come and camp where and when they want\, we have to figure out how to establish a location and claim it so we all know where we’re all going to be. It’s possible that we could decide on location A and go out there on Friday and find people camping there. If anyone can go out early on Friday\, please volunteer to do so. So\, the precise location is TBD. I’ll let you know as soon as we can get the information we need and get a plan A and plan B in place.\n\nAs far as cost\, thanks to our generous donors\, we will ask for only the usual cost: $15 per person\, max $45 per family.\n\n\nThe Troop has some compasses like in the image\, but if you can pick up one for you and your son(s)\, that would be good\, too. Also\, buy cold weather gear and sub-freezing (I recommend sub-zero) sleeping bags. Are you man enough to handle it? It will be challenging and uncomfortable–a great way to start the “New Year” on a manly footing.\n\n\n\n\n\nLastly\, and importantly: I am unable to secure sacraments for this camp. DESCRIPTION:RSVP:\n                             \n                        \n                        \n								\n								We will not attend this event\n							Event Start Date* Last name of those NOT attending* \n          \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n        \n                        \n                        \n		\n		 \nPlease RSVP so we can count for meal planning.\n\nAs described two weeks ago\, we are now ready to complete the trailer rebuild.  Attached you will find Charles Zipper’s proposed of the reconfiguration that we will work from.  Here is the work we have to do:\n\n1)  Big Trailer: replace main rear door hinges by cutting off the old steel hinges and welding a new hinge set on to it\, and creating a spare tire mount on it;  Small Trailer:  tack weld the fender back in place\, and fixing the tongue jack.\n2)  Rebuild the internal structure to accommodate:\n\n           a) installation of a new water storage vessel(s) into the trailer\, just above the axle.  The new tank(s) will hold about 100 gal water +/- \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n           b) install a new on demand cold and heated water and pump system\, complete with flow control and hose storage\, and dish wash station storage\n3)  build several wooden storage boxes to hold various sets together\n           a)  one for cooking grates\n           b)  some to store the and their shelters\n           c)  some to store long handled utensils\n           d)  table storage\n4)  Make sure we fully utilize the various standard size packing boxes we have and reorganize the use of them\n5)  reframe the interior to the degree needed to accommodate better food and supply storage\n          a)  put some hangers on the wall to allow better tool storage\n          b)  fix up a sheet metal plate in the trailer so the magnetic ‘duty blocks’ (e.g.\, ‘cook’\,  ‘firewood”\, ” Latrine duty”\, etc.) can be displayed once again to aid in fairly divvying up the work at campouts.\n\nWhen it is all said and done\, we will have two fully outfitted trailers\, one for short trips (like day events) the other for campouts of virtually any length\, and we will have modularized the materials in the large trailer to easily accommodate our supply access whether we have 6 or 30 campers on a given campout.\n\nAt present\, we need our dads with talents in:\n\nWelding:  to get the mandatory metal grinding\, cutting\, and welding done  (trailer hinges and trailer wheel fender)\, and to repair tongue jacks\nCarpentry:  leading the interior reframing.\nPlumbing:  to run the water system\, including the propane system needed for the hot water components\nElectric:  to power the water system\nPainters:  to lead the repainting  of the small wooden trailer\, and if possible to apply new emblems to both trailers.\nCooks:   to organize our boxes of cast iron\, utensils\, mixing bowls\, and etc.\, dry goods\, spices\, and staples/ extra foods that we should always have\nMaster Modulator:  someone that is a very good packrat to help us organize the trailer such that everything has its place and minimize ‘hunting and rummaging’ thru things to find what we need.\n\nHow will we accomplish this?\nWe will divide up into groups\, each group taking a section of the work- no overlap\, no confusion\, and we get things done pretty quickly.\nif you have a welder and grinder\, and can use them\, can you bring them with you this Saturday and take the lead in fixing the weldable parts?\nIf you have pex tools (you plumbers you)\, please bring them so we can (help you) make use of them.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will grill hot dogs and hamburgers and fixings for this event on site.  So\, all you really need to bring  is your water bottle and your tools.  Boys are welcome to assist in the rebuild and to be in charge of the grilling\, but the primary doers on this event are the Dads. \n\n\n\n\nTrailer\n\n\n\n\nTrailerPlanning (1)\n\nTrailerPlanning202107\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you.  God bless.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP:\n                             \n                        \n                        \n								\n								We will not attend this event\n							Event Start Date* Last name of those NOT attending* \n          \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n        \n                        \n                        \n		\n		 \nGentlemen\, \n\nHere is the scoop on the Canoe Trip:\n\nWhen:  June 16-20\, 2021\nWhere:  (see maps below) 55 miles of the Sabine River (20 year guide says this will be very easy to accomplish in the time allotted\, as the river flows between 3 and 6 mph\, typically) starting at toledo bend dam and ending at the Hwy 190 crossing of the sabine just east of Ben Weir.\nCost:    Getting there and back:  Your cover your own transportation to the river and back  (approx 4.5 hours and 275 miles one way).\n             If renting a canoe:  $100 for the canoe (inc life jackets\, paddles\, up to 3 persons per canoe) and your share of the $100 shuttle back to vehicles at the end of the trip. C. DESCRIPTION:RSVP:\n                             \n                        \n                        \n								\n								We will not attend this event\n							Event Start Date* Last name of those NOT attending* \n          \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n        \n                        \n                        \n		\n		 \n  \n\n\nFather McDonnell will be present for Confessions and Mass on Saturday Afternoon.\nThis camp will occur\, rain or shine\, will open at 3 on Friday afternoon\, and end at 11 on Sunday morning.\nCost:  Standard $15/person\, $45 max per family.\n\n\nPlease RSVP for this camp the week of March 16\, whether or not you intend to participate.\n\nGentlemen\, we will be heading to Hickory Creek Campground on Lake Lewisville.  Here is a link from Mater Dei to the exact location in the park that we will be camping:  https://goo.gl/maps/8y8zucszykb7nF2U7\n\nWe will access the primitive campsites thru Maint Rd 1 (accessible only to us and not the public\, where the vehicles will be parked)\, and will be camping in the red circled area in the image below (at dedicated camp sites located about 100-200 feet from the parking area) and rebuild benches and apply linseed oil to the deck and benches at the amphitheater located in the image.  Note that the scale of the image is in the lower right corner.  Sorry for the poor penmanship\, but I don’t write with a mouse very well.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat will we be doing?  Rebuilding benches and coating the new benches and the amphitheater deck with linseed oil at the amphitheater.  The amphitheater consists of 6 benches\, each 8 foot long with 2 2×6 for seats.  The amphitheater has a deck that is about 11′ square.  We will replace the bench seat lumber and the brackets that the bench boards are screwed into.  We will set up a cut off saw at the campsite nearest the amphitheater so we can cut the lumber.  Everything gets screwed together using Torkx (T25) coated deck screws.   Once rebuilt\, we will smooth the bench seat edges with belt sanders and then coat the bench boards and deck boards using linseed oil.  Hopefully using a sprayer to apply the linseed oil.  The park (Corps of Engineers) will provide the materials\, but we need to provide our own tools\, except that they will also provide paint brushes or the sprayer.  This means that we will need Dads to bring screw guns and T-25 screw tips.  If you have a 3×21 belt sander (corded or cordless)\, please also bring that.  I will bring a miter saw (cut off saw) so we can cut the boards to length if we need to and to cut all new bench brackets.  In this case\, each boy should be able to cut a board or two\, and all can participate in fixing the new boards with cordless drills with torx bits  and coating the boards with linseed oil.  I doubt seriously that it will take more than about 3 hours to complete this project\, so there will be ample time for fishing\, hiking\, and exploring.  Yes\, you can bring your canoe or boat.  Check the park website for info on boats.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you.  God bless.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP:\n                             \n                        \n                        \n								\n								We will not attend this event\n							Event Start Date* Last name of those NOT attending* \n          \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n            \n        \n                        \n                        \n		\n		 \nHi Folks\, \nGreat news.  We are camping a mere 30 minutes north of Mater Dei on Lake Lewisville\, in Hickory Creek Park.  This is a corps of engineers run park\, and we will be staying in the primative camping area for  camps 1\, 2\, and 3.\nThe campsites are well drained\, and accessible.  We will have no problems even in the case of rain.  However\, we must pack our stuff in from the parking area to the camps is about 100 yds.  The parking area in paved\, and is closed to campers other than ourselves.\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere is a map from Mater Dei to the actual camp spot:\nhttps://goo.gl/maps/wZJuEKAD2A1XM16m7\n\n\nWhat:      Camp focusing on Cooking\, Knots & Lashing\, Shephard’s sling use.  Troop will supply food\, and all of the cooking pots and pans and aluminum foil that the troop has.  You must cook your own (on the fire) and if you want to use your own                                   cookware\, bring it.  \n\n               \nWhen:      Friday\, 2/26-Sunday\, 2/28\, 2021\n\n \nWhere:     Primitive Area Camps 1\, 2 and 3 area at Hickory Creek Park. \n \nCost:        Park Entrance Fee:  Nothing\n \nRegister: On the Troop web page.  Even if you have already paid (many did in anticipation of January’s cancelled camp)\, register on the web site and let me know how many of you are coming.  If you don’t have credit from a previous camp\, then the cost is Camp Fee:  $15/per person\, $45 max/family.\n \nSacraments:  Fr. McDonnell will hear confessions and offer the Sacrifice of the Mass for us Saturday afternoon.\n\nMeals:     Friday- on your own.\n                Saturday & Sunday Breakfast:  will have eggs\, sausage\, hash brown potatoes\, cheese\, condiments\, and cold things such as fruit\, granola bars\,\n                Saturday Lunch- will have sandwich bread\, cold cuts\, cheese\, lettuce\, mayo and mustard\, chips\, and Gatorade/tea to drink.\n                Saturday Supper:  Makings of aluminum foil (bum) suppers- a meat (chicken\, meat balls\, or hamburger)\, potatoes\, onions\, etc. and hot apple cider\n\n                Hot Water- will be available all day so that anyone can have access to hot coffee\, hot chocolate\, hot tea\, or hot water.\n                Hot Cider- available all day.\n\nWeather:  Cool to cold\, looking good Friday\, cloudy and may rain Saturday night\, and may rain Sunday.  Dress appropriately.\n\nPark Restrictions:  \n            1)  We CAN gather firewood.  \n            2)  We WILL have to pack our gear in about 100yds.  Bring a cart.\n            3)  We WILL do a service project of stacking some of the wood at the camp.\n            4)  Camp Entrance Locked- no entry between 10 pm and 6 AM.  Camp Exit is always open.\n \nFull agenda\, maps\, etc.- see the attached acrobat file.\n \n\nThank you.  God bless.

DESCRIPTION:CAMP CANCELLED\n\n\nThis campout will focus on two separate items:  \n                        1)  Learning to use shepherd’s slings and how to lash (so we can build tripods and eventually\, trebuchets).\n                        2) Your Chef’s hat:  The troop will supply all the raw materials for the meals\, but each family will be responsible for preparing their own meals.  A meal plan will be available Tuesday night (1/19) so you can be thinking about it.\n\nSacraments?  Yes\, Fr. McDonnell has confirmed that he will be hearing confessions and saying Mass Saturday afternoon.\n \nSign up is now open for this camp.  Camp will run from Friday night and end at 10 am Sunday. \nVanAlstyne has had less than 0.10″ rain since Jan 1\, so we can expect pretty dry conditions to camp.  Long range forecast calls for lows in the low 40’s and highs partly cloudy and in the upper 50’s.
